Years prior to the events of Iron Man, Tony Stark attended a conference in Switzerland, and during that conference, he met Maya Hansen – a brilliant scientist who was responsible for the creation of Extemis. Those that are subjected to the Extremis serum develop extraordinary regenerative capabilities. At this same conference, Stark also met Aldrich Killian, and when Killian invited Stark to discuss his company, Advanced Idea Mechanics, Killian was rejected when Tony failed to meet with him to discuss the company further.

Years later, Tony is having anxiety attacks after the events of The Avengers, and, convinced that another attack is imminent, has built additional Iron Man armors to combat future threats, including an experimental armor that can assemble itself through the utilization of microchips embedded in his body. However, the world has been threatened with terrorist attacks by an individual calling himself The Mandarin. After a Mandarin attack at TCL Chinese Theatre (formerly known as Grauman’s Chinese Theatre) which leaves Happy Hogan, Stark Industries Chief of Security and one of Tony’s closest friends, Stark issues a challenge to the Mandarin on live television.

In response, the Mandarin’s helicopters destroy Stark’s residence, and while Stark was able to escape the devastation, Tony now has to investigate what the Mandarin plans to do before it’s too late.

The movie borrowed heavily from the Extemis story arc that was published in 2005 and 2006 by Marvel Comics. In many aspects, Tony still behaved as a millionaire playboy (committed to Pepper, of course) who loved to tinker with his inventions. However, we also got to see his internal struggles that came about from his near death experience near the end of The Avengers. His desire to protect those that he’s close to and his internal struggles played out very well in the movie as he dealt with the threats presented to him. The movie was definitely action packed, and the special effects regarding the Iron Man armors was incredible. There were moments in the movie where Tony didn’t have access to the armors and had to rely on his ingenuity and inner strength.
